Giọng Ray LaMontagne có gì đó liên tưởng tới Neil Young và Van Morrison. Bản thân Ray LaMontagne tự nhận là mình chịu ảnh hưởng của Stills, thành viên của nhóm Crossby, Stills, Nash and Young nổi tiếng ngày xưa. Ray có ngoại hình của một kẻ vô gia cư (nhưng cũng có người bảo có khuôn mặt giống Chúa Jesus) là một kẻ cô độc, shy và khép mình với xã hội, hầu như không có bạn bè. Sau khi tốt nghiệp phổ thông, anh ta làm công nhân trong một nhà máy giầy. Một buổi sáng sớm, anh ta nghe thấy từ radio một bài hát của Stills. Thế là hôm đó anh ta nghỉ làm, đi lùng mua đĩa nhạc của Stills và quyết định bỏ việc để trở thành ca sĩ/nhạc sĩ.
Giọng của Ray truyền cảm, buồn bã và cô độc một cách hiếm có. Và lyrics của anh cũng rất đáng nhớ.
