"Đó là trăn trở của bác sĩ (BS) Đỗ Gia Cảnh - Viện Vệ sinh Dịch tễ Trung ương (VSDTTƯ) - Người vừa được Viện Tiểu sử Quốc tế Hoa Kỳ (ABI) bầu là "Nhân vật của năm 2008" trong lĩnh vực y tế và chăm sóc sức khoẻ."
Bài này không có gì đáng nói nếu như không có vinh danh của báo Dân trí với bác sĩ Đỗ Gia Cảnh khi gọi ông là "nhân vật của năm 2008" và giới thiệu ông là "người vừa được Viện Tiểu sử Quốc tế Hoa Kỳ (ABI) bầu là "Nhân vật của năm 2008" trong lĩnh vực y tế và chăm sóc sức khoẻ."
Theo Wikipedia thì tổ chức American Biographical Institute này sống bằng cách bán danh hiệu cho những người hám danh. Thường họ gửi thư tới những nhà khoa học hay chính khách hay bất cứ ai có chút tên tuổi, chủ yếu ở các nước đang phát triển, đề nghị một vài danh hiệu gì đó, và nếu người nhận được thư chào mời đồng ý, họ sẽ gửi bằng cấp đó cho người này với lệ phí nhất định. Theo trang này thì lệ phí cho danh hiệu "Nhân vật của năm 2005" là $195, hiện giờ không biết có tăng do lạm phát không (cái này phải hỏi bác sĩ Cảnh).
Điều đáng nói là danh hiệu "Man of the Year" này họ không chỉ đề nghị một người, mà còn đề nghị vô số người. Google với từ khóa: "man of the year" "american biographical institute" ra gần 4000 kết quả.
Họ còn bán rất nhiều danh hiệu khác như: Bộ óc vĩ đại của thế kỷ 21, Thiên tài của nước Mỹ, Giải thưởng hòa bình quốc tế, Nhà lãnh đạo xuất sắc....
Cũng nói thêm là mặc dù rất ít người xuất sắc trong số những người chấp nhận mua các danh hiệu này, nhưng cũng có nhiều người là các nhà khoa học có tên tuổi nhất định, chứ không hoàn toàn là những người kém năng lực. Điểm chung của họ chỉ là thích tô vẽ để mua danh thôi.
Có những người mua hàng chục danh hiệu để khoe, ví dụ như ông giáo sư này ở Israel, ông giáo sư này ở Anh hay như ông giáo sư này ở Đài Loan. Như thể là một cơn nghiện, chứ nếu không việc gì phải mua hàng chục danh hiệu thế?
Không chỉ các giáo sư mà các chính khách ở các nước đang phát triển cũng là khách hàng tiềm năng của các tổ chức tiểu sử. Tổng thống Gambia và cố Thủ tướng Pakistan Benazir Bhutto cũng từng là khách hàng của American Biographical Institute như bác sĩ Cảnh.
Sau này gần gần già thế nào mình cũng phải mua vài cái đem treo phòng khách (và cả phòng ngủ) để nhâm nhi cho đỡ buồn trong khủng hoảng tuổi trung niên. $200 để thành nhân vật trong năm, quá rẻ. Đến Putin cũng chỉ được vậy thôi*.
Thực ra việc một số người tự ve vuốt cái tôi của mình bằng những danh hiệu như thế cũng là chuyện bình thường, đã sinh ra mấy người lại không hám danh, lại không thích được ca ngợi và đánh giá cao. Cái chính là đừng tự huyễn hoặc mình là thực sự vai trò của mình như thế, và báo chí nên tránh những nhầm lẫn trong việc tung hô những thứ không đáng để tung hô.
